The Environmental Justice Project is a hybrid social justice and environmental-based RSO aiming to educate UD about environmental injustices, especially in marginalized, underrepresented, and vulnerable communities. We also strive to give our members the tools and knowledge to help support these afflicted communities in an effective and respectful way.
One of the primary ways we strive to help vulnerable communities is through grants which are governmental or private funds allocated to groups to fund projects and public services. Communities can use this money to fund anything from restoration projects to improving or creating institutions.
During summer 2022, TEJP members worked on a grant application for the Tyonek Tribe to build a community center, including a language preservation center, children center, and small business spaces.
During summer 2022, a TEJP member helped local government members in the city of Mexico Beach, Florida apply for a grant to build to kayak launch sites as part of their community rebuilding goals. In February 2023, the city was awarded the grant and received $60,000 from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection through their Coastal Partnership Initiative to complete their project.
